Itinerary
Day 1: Fes → Middle Atlas → Ziz Valley → Merzouga
Your express Sahara adventure begins early in Fes with a private pickup from your accommodation. The road south from Fes climbs immediately into the Middle Atlas — a world apart from the medina's labyrinthine alleyways. Here the landscape opens into high cedar-forested plateaux, where wild Barbary macaques — the only free-living primates in Africa north of the Sahara — clamber among ancient Atlas cedar trees estimated to be over 800 years old. The charming Alpine-style town of Ifrane, set at 1,665 metres above sea level, comes as a genuine surprise with its European-style chalets and cool mountain air before the road descends through Midelt — Morocco's "city of apples" — and the landscape shifts dramatically as the vegetation thins and the earth turns terracotta-red. Passing through the geological wonder of the Ziz Gorges, you enter the great Ziz Valley: a spectacular corridor of date palms stretching south for over 160 kilometres, flanked by sun-bleached limestone cliffs and ancient ksar villages built from the red earth of the valley floor. As you approach Merzouga in the late afternoon, the extraordinary sight of Erg Chebbi announces itself on the horizon — a sea of golden dunes rising 150 metres against an immense sky. Your Berber guide leads you on camelback into the dunes as the sun descends, painting the sand in amber, rose, and deep copper. At the desert camp, dinner is a slow-cooked lamb tagine eaten beside a fire, with a canopy of stars unlike anything visible from any city on earth.
Overnight: Merzouga desert at Tiziri Camp or Sahara Eden Camp
Day 2: Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Fes
As dawn breaks over Erg Chebbi, wake before sunrise for one of the most extraordinary spectacles in the natural world. The horizon shifts from deep violet to amber to blazing gold as the 150-metre dunes catch the first light, their ridgelines casting long blue shadows across the rippled sand. Ride back to camp on camelback for a traditional Berber breakfast of msemen flatbread, fresh dates, argan honey, and warm mint tea served in the traditional three-glass ceremony that has been the desert greeting of hospitality for centuries. The morning is yours to spend at the dunes: climb the highest ridge for panoramic views across the sea of sand, try sandboarding on the steeper slopes, or simply sit in the silence and absorb the profound stillness that only a Sahara morning can offer — no roads, no sounds, just the wind shaping the dunes and the distant call of a desert bird. After a final walk among the dunes, your guide drives you northwest through the Ziz Valley — that spectacular palm-lined corridor carved by the Ziz River through barren limestone plateaux, dotted with ancient ksar villages, earthen granaries, and traditional Berber settlements that have changed little in centuries. Stop in Midelt for lunch at a local restaurant and browse the market for fossils, geodes, and handmade crafts. The afternoon drive continues through the cedar forests and mountain meadows of the Middle Atlas before descending toward Fes, Morocco's ancient spiritual capital, where you arrive in the early evening having experienced the full wonder of the Sahara in under 48 hours.
