Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech → Telouet Kasbah → Dades Valley
Your four-day Sahara adventure begins with an early morning departure from Marrakech, heading southeast into the High Atlas. The first stop is the extraordinary Telouet Kasbah — a crumbling yet magnificent earthen palace that was once home to El Glaoui, the powerful Pasha of Marrakech whose influence over southern Morocco was absolute under the French Protectorate. The kasbah's elaborate interior — carved stucco ceilings, painted cedar woodwork, and intricate zellij tilework — are among the finest surviving examples of early 20th-century Moroccan palace architecture, and the building's slow, photogenic decay makes it one of the most atmospheric sites in the entire country. From Telouet a dramatic mountain road descends toward the Ounila Valley, following the ancient caravan route that predates the modern Tizi n'Tichka highway by centuries. Just before reaching the valley floor, you stop at the iconic Aït Ben Haddou — the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of earthen clay towers that has served as backdrop for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and dozens of other major productions. A guided walk through the fortified village reveals centuries of Saharan architecture: granaries, a mosque, earthen towers, and the panoramic view from the hill above the ksar across the Ounila River to the surrounding desert plains. From Aït Ben Haddou the road continues through Ouarzazate — Morocco's film capital — and into the dramatic Dades Valley, where you arrive in the early evening. Your hotel sits at the foot of the red canyon walls of the Dades Gorge, whose dramatic rock formations glow terracotta in the last light.
Overnight: Dades Valley – Dar Blues Or Dades Paradise
Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga
Explore the spectacular Dades Gorges in the morning. Continue to Todra Gorge, a canyon perfect for photography and short walks. Head to Merzouga, where you ride camels into the Sahara Desert at sunset. At the end of the day arrival in a Berber luxury desert camp, experiencing traditional cuisine and music beneath the stars.
Overnight: Merzouga desert at Tiziri Camp Or Sahara Eden Camp
Day 3: Sahara Desert Full Day
The second full day in the Sahara is yours to inhabit entirely — a day with no fixed agenda and nothing but the dunes, the sky, and the deep culture of the desert to fill it. Wake before dawn for the Erg Chebbi sunrise: as the sky shifts from deep indigo through violet to blazing copper-gold, the 150-metre dunes transform with the changing light, each ripple casting long blue shadows that shorten as the sun climbs. After a Berber breakfast of msemen flatbread, amlou (a paste of ground almonds, argan oil, and honey), fresh medjool dates, and strong mint tea, the day opens with choices. Head out with your guide on foot for a dune trek — climbing the highest ridgeline for panoramic views across the erg, the distant Jebel Saghro mountains faintly visible to the south. Try sandboarding on the steeper north-facing slopes. Or join the 4x4 excursion that takes you off-road across the flat hammada to the Gnawa village of Khamlia — a small community whose ancestors were brought to Morocco from sub-Saharan Africa, and who maintain their ancient tradition of spiritual music played on the guembri lute and iron castanets with hypnotic, haunting power. In the afternoon, explore the fossil beds at the base of the dunes — extraordinary deposits of Cambrian trilobites and ancient marine creatures that reveal the prehistoric ocean which once covered this landscape 500 million years ago. Visit nomadic Berber families living in traditional goat-hair tents: their hospitality — tea, flat bread baked in the sand, stories told through gesture and laughter — is one of the most genuine human encounters this journey offers. As the light turns golden, your camel guide leads you back into the dunes for the sunset ride.
Overnight: Merzouga desert at Tiziri Camp Or Sahara Eden Camp
Day 4: Merzouga → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate → Marrakech
After a final sunrise and breakfast at the desert camp, you depart Erg Chebbi and begin the long westward drive back through some of Morocco's most spectacular landscapes. The road leaves the golden world of the dunes and passes through the historic trading town of Rissani — gateway to the ancient Tafilalt oasis, once Morocco's most important Saharan caravan staging post — before joining the Route des Kasbahs heading west. The Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river valley at over 200 kilometres — is a ribbon of date palm oases, ancient earthen kasbahs, and fortified ksar villages that follows the course of the Draa River through a landscape of extraordinary contrasts: the lush green of the palmeries against the tawny red of the desert beyond, ancient towers rising from the valley floor, and the distant snow-capped High Atlas on the northern horizon. Stop to photograph the oasis landscape and walk among the palm groves — hundreds of thousands of date palms shading the small irrigated gardens where cumin, coriander, henna, and vegetables are grown using irrigation methods unchanged since the medieval era. Continuing through Zagora and Ouarzazate, you begin the dramatic ascent of the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres — the highest paved road in North Africa — where the views across the snow-capped range are extraordinary on clear days. The descent on the northern side passes through argan-tree-covered foothills unique to Morocco, where cooperatives staffed by Amazigh women press argan oil by hand. Marrakech appears in the warm evening light, the journey from desert to city complete.
