Itinerary

1

Day 1: Errachidia – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

Start your 5-Day Sahara Desert tour from Errachidia with a morning pickup from your hotel or the airport. Travel southeast through the fertile Ziz Valley, surrounded by lush palm groves and traditional Berber villages. Stop in Erfoud, known for its fossils and artisan workshops, before visiting Rissani, a historic trading post of the old caravan routes. Arrive in Merzouga, at the edge of the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes. Enjoy a camel trek into the golden dunes, witness a spectacular sunset over the Sahara, and spend the night in a traditional Berber desert camp.

Overnight: Berber desert camp in Merzouga

Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Khamlia – Nomad Villages – Merzouga

Wake up early to experience the magical sunrise over Erg Chebbi. After breakfast, explore the desert on camelback or on foot, and try sandboarding on the tallest dunes. Visit Khamlia village, famous for its Gnawa music, and meet nomad families to learn about their traditional lifestyle. Spend another night in the desert camp, enjoying Berber music, Moroccan cuisine, and the serenity of the endless sand dunes.

Day 3: Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

After a final Sahara sunrise and breakfast at the desert camp, you depart Erg Chebbi and head west into the pre-Saharan landscape, joining the spectacular Route des Kasbahs — one of the world's great road journeys. Stop in Rissani to browse the market and visit the historic ksar before continuing through Erfoud — famous for its extraordinary Devonian fossil beds — toward the first dramatic geological landmark of the day: the Todgha Gorges. The Todgha Gorges are among Morocco's most spectacular natural wonders: a narrow canyon carved through sheer rose-coloured limestone cliffs that rise 300 metres on either side, their walls so close together in the narrowest sections that the midday sun barely reaches the canyon floor. The cool, crystal-clear Todgha River runs along the gorge floor between stands of trembling poplars and willows, and local Berber children paddle in the shallow pools. Rock climbers from across Europe make the Todgha Gorges one of their most sought-after destinations; photographers come for the extraordinary quality of light on the coloured rock faces in the morning and afternoon hours. After lunch at a riverside restaurant — fresh trout grilled over charcoal or a slow-cooked lamb tagine — the afternoon drive continues through the spectacular Dades Valley: past dramatic rock formations known as the "Monkey Fingers," through a series of ancient Berber villages where traditional earthen architecture blends into the landscape, and alongside the Dades River with its ribbon of green cultivation cutting through the ochre plains. Your hotel in the valley sits at the foot of the red canyon walls of the Dades Gorge, which glow deep terracotta-red in the last light of the afternoon.

Overnight: Hotel or riad in Dades Valley

4

Day 4: Dades Valley – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – High Atlas Mountains

Leave the Dades Valley and cross the High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping for breathtaking panoramic views. Visit Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and historic kasbah, well-known as a filming location for movies like Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. Continue to Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood of Morocco," where you can explore the Taourirt Kasbah and local film studios. Journey through the scenic valleys and mountain landscapes as you approach Marrakech.

Overnight: Riad or hotel in Marrakech medina

5

Day 5: Marrakech Sightseeing

Your final day is spent exploring Marrakech — a city that has been astounding visitors for a thousand years. The morning guided tour begins at the Jemaa el-Fna, the great central square of the medina that UNESCO recognised in 2001 as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Even in the morning, the square hums with energy: orange juice vendors line the perimeter, men with trained monkeys and cobras solicit photographers, and the smell of freshly baked msemen and boiling harira soup drifts from the surrounding stalls. Your guide leads you into the medina's souk quarter — a labyrinth of covered alleyways organised by craft, each quarter dedicated to a different trade: the copper workers hammering intricate patterns into plates and lanterns; the leather dyers with their great stone vats of saffron, poppy, and indigo; the woodworkers carving elaborate geometric patterns into cedar and thuya. The Bahia Palace — built in the 1890s for Si Moussa, Grand Vizier of Morocco — reveals what wealth and craftsmanship could achieve at the height of the imperial era: 160 rooms covering 8,000 square metres, every surface covered in hand-cut zellij tiles, carved plaster arabesques, or painted cedar ceilings. The nearby Saadian Tombs — sealed behind a wall for over 200 years and only rediscovered in 1917 — contain the elaborately decorated marble mausoleums of the 16th-century Saadian sultans. The afternoon is free for independent exploration: the electric-blue Jardin Majorelle, a traditional hammam experience, or a final mint tea on a medina rooftop watching the swifts wheel above the ancient roofscape. Your driver collects you at the appointed time for your airport transfer.
