Itinerary
Day 1: Errachidia – Ziz Valley – Merzouga
Begin your Sahara Trekking Tour from Errachidia early in the morning. Drive through the scenic Ziz Valley, famous for its vast palm groves, fortified Berber villages, and breathtaking landscapes. Stop in Midelt for refreshments before continuing to Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Check in at your desert lodge or hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening preparing for your desert adventure.
Overnight: Desert lodge or hotel in Merzouga
Day 2: Merzouga – Sahara Desert Trekking – Wild Camping
After an early breakfast, you begin the trekking element of this unique desert adventure — exploring the vast Erg Chebbi on foot. Walking through the Sahara offers an entirely different experience of the desert: the sound of your footsteps on the sand, the way the dunes shift and change with every step, the discovery of desert beetles tracking perfect lines across the surface, and the profound silence that only those who have walked in a true desert can fully understand. Your Berber guide — a desert native who has navigated these sands since childhood — leads you through the dune corridors, crossing ridgelines and descending into sheltered bowls where the wind has carved extraordinary formations and where the isolation from the modern world feels complete. The trekking route covers between 10 and 16 kilometres depending on the group's pace, passing through areas of the dune field rarely visited by tourists who arrive only by camel or vehicle. As the afternoon light turns the sand from gold to deep amber, you reach the site chosen for your wild desert camp — a position among the dunes selected for its shelter from wind and its panoramic view of the sunset and the vast star field overhead. The camp is simple and authentic: traditional Berber tents, sleeping mats and blankets, a small fire for cooking and warmth. Dinner is a slow-cooked lamb and vegetable tagine prepared over the fire, eaten under a canopy of stars undimmed by any light pollution. In the Sahara far from any settlement, the Milky Way is visible as a glowing river of light stretched across the entire sky — one of the most moving sights this journey offers.
Overnight: Wild desert camp under tents
Day 3: Merzouga – 4x4 Desert Excursion – Khamlia Village – Wild Camping
Wake up early for a magical sunrise over the dunes, then enjoy breakfast at your camp. Embark on a 4x4 desert excursion to explore hidden parts of the Erg Chebbi desert. Visit Khamlia Village, known for its Gnawa music and nomadic culture, interact with locals, and enjoy a cultural immersion experience. Continue exploring the desert and set up your second night of wild camping in a remote dune location.
Overnight: Wild desert camp under stars
Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Merzouga
A day of cultural exploration beyond the dunes — an opportunity to understand the human world of the Sahara alongside its natural grandeur. Your first stop is Rissani: a historic market town at the heart of the ancient Tafilalt oasis, once the richest and most strategically important oasis in all of North Africa. It was the starting point of the Tafilalt dynasty that gave rise to the current Alaoui royal family, and its old ksar of Oulad Abdelhalim — a crumbling 17th-century fortified village — is one of the finest examples of earthen Saharan architecture in the region. The Rissani souk, held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, is one of the most authentic in Morocco: livestock traders negotiate over camels and goats in the animal section, while the covered market sells freshly harvested dates from dozens of varieties, aromatic spices, Berber silver jewellery, hand-woven baskets, and traditional blue-dyed indigo cloth of the Saharan peoples. From Rissani you drive to Erfoud, a sun-bleached desert town famous above all for its extraordinary fossil deposits: the surrounding hammada contains some of the richest Devonian and Cambrian fossil beds in the world, and local artisan workshops extract and polish trilobites, ammonites, and nautiloids to create ornamental pieces that tell the story of the prehistoric ocean — 500 million years old — that once covered this entire landscape. Visit a fossil workshop to watch artisans work with hammer and chisel, separating fossils from the limestone matrix with extraordinary precision, and learn about the geological history that makes this corner of the Sahara one of the world's most important palaeontological sites. Return to Merzouga in the early evening for a comfortable night at your desert lodge.
Overnight: Desert lodge or hotel in Merzouga
Day 5: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Errachidia
After breakfast, depart Merzouga and drive back through the scenic Ziz Valley, passing lush palm groves and traditional Berber villages. Enjoy panoramic desert landscapes and photo stops along the way. Arrive in Errachidia in the afternoon, concluding your 5-Day Sahara Trekking Tour with unforgettable memories of the dunes, desert culture, and wild camping experience.
